10 Reasons From a Chiropractor With More Than 46 Years of Experience
By Robert B. Sheely, D.C., F.I.C.C., F.I.A.C.A.
If you're suffering from neck pain, back pain, headaches, numbness, sciatica, or injuries from an automobile accident, you've probably asked yourself:
"Should I see a chiropractor?"
After practicing chiropractic since 1980 and helping thousands of patients, my answer is simple:
You deserve a doctor who will spend the time to discover WHY you have the problem—not just where it hurts.
That philosophy has guided my entire career.
1. I Don't Chase Symptoms—I Search for the Cause
Pain is important, but pain is only a messenger.
A patient may complain of numb fingers, but the problem may originate in the neck.
Another patient may have knee pain that actually begins with pelvic imbalance.
Sciatica may originate from the lumbar spine, the sacroiliac joint, muscular dysfunction, or several contributing factors.
Finding the true source requires listening, observation, and a comprehensive examination.
That is why your consultation is often one of the most important parts of your visit.

2. Every Patient Is a Different Puzzle
After more than four decades in practice, I still enjoy solving difficult cases.
I often joke that I get to be Sherlock Holmes every day.
I watch patients walk.
I observe posture.
I notice how they rise from a chair.
I evaluate movement patterns that most people never realize are revealing important information.
Even the way someone climbs onto an examination table tells me something about how their body functions.
The body is constantly communicating.
The key is learning how to listen.
3. My Examination Is Different
Many first-time patients expect to point where it hurts and receive an immediate adjustment. That has never been my philosophy. Instead, I perform one of the most comprehensive examinations many patients have ever experienced. Depending upon the patient's condition, the evaluation may include:
• Health history
• Systems review
• Neurological examination
• Orthopedic testing https://www.sheelychiro.com/orthopedic-neurological-tests
• Reflex evaluation
• Muscle testing
• Balance assessment
• Postural analysis
• Digital range-of-motion measurements
• Functional movement evaluation
• Palpation of the spine and supporting tissues
Every test has a purpose.
Every finding contributes another clue.
We also use digital X-Ray Software to identify biomechanical dysfunction, pathophysiology, and ligament damage in our reporting.
4. I Believe in Objective Measurement
One of the greatest advances in modern healthcare is the ability to measure change. Rather than simply asking, "Do you feel better?"
I prefer measurable improvement. Technology allows us to document posture, muscle strength, flexibility, inflammation, and function. Patients appreciate seeing proof that healing is occurring. Science should support clinical judgment—not replace it. One reason I see so many personal injury patients is that attorneys refer them to me because my documentation explains their cases in detail. We use objective findings and explain the associated trauma research in a way that juries would easily understand. This allows the law firm to easily present its cases to the insurance companies and often settle them before going to trial.
5. One Patient Changed the Way I Explain Chiropractic
A woman came into my office bent almost ninety degrees.
She had spent two weeks hospitalized.
Approximately $80,000 had been spent attempting to help her.
She was discharged without meaningful improvement.
Within days of appropriate chiropractic care, she was standing upright and functioning again.
Experiences like that reinforce something I've learned over decades:
Sometimes the simplest principles, applied correctly, produce extraordinary results.
6. Symptoms Are the Last Thing to Appear
One statement I repeat almost daily is this:
Symptoms are the last thing to show up when you're becoming sick and the first thing to disappear when you're getting better.
That means pain relief does not necessarily equal complete healing.
Recovery occurs in stages.
First comes relief.
Then stabilization.
Finally, strengthening and restoration.
Stopping care simply because pain decreases can leave the underlying problem unresolved.
7. I Welcome Skeptical Patients
Some of my favorite patients began as skeptics.
Frankly, skepticism is healthy.
People should ask questions.
I encourage it.
I explain every test I perform.
Everything I do is based upon anatomy, biomechanics, neurology, orthopedic examination principles, and years of clinical experience.
Healthcare should make sense.
Patients deserve answers.
8. Faith and Science Can Work Together
I believe the body possesses an incredible ability to heal.
I also believe we should use every scientific tool available to document that healing.
Technology, objective testing, and evidence-based practice strengthen chiropractic care.
Faith in the body's design and respect for science are not opposites.
They work together.
That philosophy has shaped my practice for over forty-six years.
9. One Skeptical Patient I'll Never Forget
A gentleman came to see me only because a friend insisted.
He had lived with back pain for two years.
He did not believe chiropractic could help.
After a thorough examination, I identified a sacroiliac dysfunction and treated it.
He stood up.
Then he got emotional about it.
Not because of pain.
Because he couldn't believe relief was possible after suffering for so long.
Moments like that remind me why I entered this profession.

10. You Have Nothing to Lose by Getting Answers
I never pressure patients into treatment.
My goal is understanding.
At the end of every consultation, I ask:
"Is there anything I haven't asked that you think I need to know?"
Only after I fully understand the patient do we proceed with an examination designed specifically for their condition.
No two people receive exactly the same evaluation.
Every patient is unique.
Every case deserves individual attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic safe?
When preceded by an appropriate history and examination, chiropractic care is a conservative healthcare option that has helped millions of people improve function and reduce pain.
Will I be adjusted on my first visit?
Not always.
The first priority is understanding your condition. If additional testing or imaging is needed, that should be completed first.
Why is the examination so thorough?
Because the location of your pain is not always the location of the problem.
The better we understand your condition, the more precise your care can be.
How do I know if chiropractic can help me?
The best place to start is with a consultation and examination by an experienced chiropractic physician who can evaluate your individual situation.
Final Thoughts
After 46 years in practice, I remain as excited about chiropractic as the day I graduated.
I still enjoy difficult cases.
I still love solving problems.
I still believe that the human body, when given the opportunity, possesses an extraordinary ability to heal.
If you have been living with pain, stiffness, headaches, or injuries that haven't responded the way you hoped, don't settle for guessing.
